Strawberry Frozen Yogurt

I recently got a new addition to my kitchen-an ice cream maker.  I have been talking about getting an ice cream maker for awhile now, and now that the weather here is downright hot, I am so glad that I finally can say that I will be able to make homemade ice cream!  I decided to get the KitchenAid Ice Cream Maker attachment since I already have (and love) my KitchenAid stand mixer and I figured it would be easier to store rather than getting another small appliance.

I am happy to report that my first "experiment" with my new toy was extremely successful!  I made Strawberry Greek frozen yogurt since I had all those strawberries from strawberry picking to use up.  I had frozen a bunch of strawberries and these were perfect for this recipe.

The strawberry flavor in this frozen yogurt is really evident and delicious. I love that the Greek yogurt makes it extra creamy and also added a bit of tartness.  If you don't like that tart flavor, you can use more sugar or regular yogurt instead of Greek.

I can say with confidence that I am going to be having a great time all summer long trying out new homemade ice cream recipes!

 Strawberry Frozen Yogurt

1 pound strawberries, rinsed and hulled and sliced into small pieces
2/3 cup sugar
2 teaspoons vodka or kirsch  (optional - I omitted)
1 cup plain whole milk yogurt or plain Greek yogurt
1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice (optional-I omitted)

Combine sliced strawberries, sugar and vodka or kirsch (if using) in a bowl; cover with plastic wrap and allow mixture to sit at room temperature for 2 hours, stirring occasionally.

Transfer strawberry mixture to a blender or food processor.  Add the yogurt and lemon juice and pulse until the mixture is smooth.  If desired, press the mixture through a mesh strainer to remove any seeds (I did not do this).

Chill for 1 hour then freeze in your ice cream maker according to the manufacturer's instructions.
