Since we've been having such wonderful warm weather lately, I decided that I wanted to choose something that could be grilled. Caitlin has a ton of great burgers on her blog so I decided to start there. I ended up choosing this recipe for BBQ Cheddar Burgers with Caramelized Onions because I new immediately that it would be something that both Matt and I would really like. It was a real treat for Matt because we don't eat a ton of red meat, and he has made it clear to me that he does like the occasional meal made with beef, and I also know how much he loves anything with barbecue sauce on it. I loved this recipe because I like trying new spins on burgers-we almost never had plain old burgers in our house!
I was so glad that I chose this recipe. The cheese and onions are added into the meat when you form the patties so they make a really moist and flavorful burger. We topped ours with additional cheese, lettuce and tomato and I served them on homemade hamburger buns. They were the perfect thing for a warm evening on the deck!
BBQ Cheddar Burgers with Caramelized Onions
1 1/4 pounds ground beef
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 onion, diced
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
1/2 cup barbecue sauce
Heat oil in a skillet over medium-low heat. Add the onions and let cook until golden and soft, about 35 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Meanwhile, combine the ground beef, cheese, and barbecue sauce in a large bowl and mix, using your hands. When the onions are ready, fold them into the mixture using a wooden spoon. Mix until combined.
Form mixture into 4-6 patties. Cook on a preheated grill, about 10-12 minutes for medium-well, depending on the size of the patties. Serve with buns and your favorite burger toppings.
Looks delicious!
